Teeing it up for Sept. 16

PGA Tour

Event: BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., Thursday through Sunday.

Last Year: Billy Horschel, in the midst of his run to the FedEx Cup, posted four scores in the 60s, including a 7-under-par 63 in the third round, to claim a two-stroke victory over Bubba Watson at Cherry Hills Country Club near Denver. Horschel, who tied for second a week earlier in the Deutsche Bank Championship and captured the Tour Championship a week later, was in such control that he could coast home by finishing off a 69 with 11 consecutive pars. He bounced back after a shaky finish at the Deutsche Bank, where he had a chance to win before hitting his approach shot on the final hole into a hazard in front of the green. Watson closed with a third straight 66, but his only bogeys, on the first and ninth holes, proved to be the difference.

Event: Solheim Cup at St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in St. Leon-Rot, Germany, Friday through Sunday.

2013: Caroline Hedwall of Sweden sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the final hole to claim a 1-up victory over Michelle Wie at Colorado Golf Club and clinch the European team’s first victory over the United States on American soil. The Euros, captained by Liselotte Neumann of Sweden, claimed an 18-10 victory over Meg Mallon’s Americans. It also marked the first time that the Europeans won two straight matches in the series, also having claimed a 15-13 victory in 2011 at Killeen Castle Golf Resort in Ireland. The United States leads the series 8-5, having won three in a row twice – in 1994-1996-1998 and 2005-2007-2009.
