Park Country Club member Woody Arnold shot a 1-over par 72 to lead after the first of three rounds in the 20th New York State Super Senior Championship at the Onondaga Golf and Country Club. Arnold had four birdies, three bogeys and one double-bogey 7 on the ninth hole in his round as he took a two-stroke lead over John Hathaway, a NYSGA Association member. Another Park golfer, Michael McNulty, shot 4-over-par 75 to stand in an 11-way tie for seventh place in the 59th State Senior Championship being held at the same time on the Fayetteville layout.
Don Enga, an associate member of the NYSGA, shot 1-under 70 for the first day lead among the seniors. McNulty had four bogeys, three on the front nine, and no birdies in his round.
Next best among Western New York seniors was Albert Paonessa III (Niagara Falls CC) with 79, good for a tie for 42nd place.
