Poetry and Literature Calendar (Sept. 13 to Sept 19)

Tuesday, 7 p.m.: Medaille College’s The Write Thing Series reading by Bella Poynton. She is a Buffalo-based playwright, theater artist and arts educator focusing primarily on science fiction and fantasy material. Her plays have been developed at the Great Plains Theater Conference, the Barrow Group, the Science Fiction Theater Company, OtherWorld Theatre, and Road Less Traveled Productions. Her play “Speed of Light,” which was a semifinalist at the O’Neill Theater Conference and received honorable mention on the 2015 Kilroys List, is being produced by Road Less Traveled Productions from through Oct. 4. Poyton’s play “Medusa Undone” won the eighth annual New Works Festival at Pandora Productions, and will be developed by the Antaeus Company in Los Angeles in 2016. Wednesday, 6:15 P.M.: Spotlight on Youth: Just Buffalo Literary Center sponsored open format poetry, spoken word, musical performance, dance, and visual arts series for young people, ages 12 to 21. Wednesday, 7 p.m.: Buffalo Books and Beer Series: Book talk, discussion and book signing with authors Sonya Lea and E.R. Baxter III. Lea is a writer and filmmaker whose new book “Wondering Who You Are: A Memoir” (Tin House Books) tells the story of rebuilding her relationship with her husband of 23 years after he loses all of his functional memory following traumatic cancer surgery. Baxter’s “Niagara Digressions” (Starcherone Books) has been described as “a seasoned storyteller’s work via cutup method, combining history and naturalist memoir, (presenting) land as historical palimpsest, from ancient cave paintings to 1960s mimeographed poetry, the massacre of the buffalo to the manufacture of Shredded Wheat cereal, and all points in-between.” Books for sale by Talking Leaves Books.
