Sister Arthur Wingerter, longtime teacher

Sister Arthur Wingerter, born Mary Gertrude in Buffalo, died on Thursday in the Stella Niagara Health Center, Stella Niagara. She was 87.

Sister Arthur graduated from the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in Eggertsville in 1945 and later attended Rosary Hill College (which later became Daemen College) in Amherst where she received her B.S. degree in Education.

Sister Arthur began her teaching career in 1949 at St. Ann’s School in Buffalo. She later taught at St. Lawrence and St. Benedict Schools, in Buffalo; St. Peter’s School in Lewiston; St. Aloysius Academy and St. Rose School in New Lexington, Ohio; Sacred Heart Elementary and St. John Schools in Columbus, Ohio; and St. Anthony School in Charleston, W.Va.

Sister Arthur retired in 2000 and was in residence at St. Benedict Convent, Buffalo, and then at St. Mary’s Apartments in Williamsville, before moving to the Stella Niagara Health Center in October 2008.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita Smith and Bernadette Wingerter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in the Sisters’ Chapel at Stella Niagara.
