Ryan has 'full confidence' in Carpenter; trusts Bills' kicker has thick skin

Rex Ryan never did replace kicker Dan Carpenter, something he threatened to do more than once to the Buffalo Bills' kicker during his preseason struggles.

The coach is hoping the harsh public criticism he has directed toward Carpenter will help him snap out of a 3-for-6 slump in field-goal attempts. Carpenter also missed an extra-point try from the new longer distance of 33 yards.

“He’s a kicker,” Ryan said. “You’ve got to have skin like an armadillo to be a kicker. He has that. He knows he’s kicking this week, so we’ll see. But I will say this: he’s kicked better” in practice.

Ryan recalls, when he was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, seeing their outstanding kicker at the time, Matt Stover, have his share of preseason struggles.

“My gosh, sometimes couldn’t make a kick,” Ryan said. “And then you go into the real game, he doesn’t miss them. And Dan’s proven that he’s that kind of kicker. He can kick here, he can kick in the conditions, so I just want to make sure that he’s ready and I think he’s ready to go.

“I have full confidence in him and if he wants to stick it to me” by performing well “that’s fine, too. I love it.”
