An early morning fire at a Hertel Avenue store and apartment complex injured several people and left nearly $450,000 in damage to the two-story building and its contents, reported the Buffalo Fire Department.
The call came in just after 2 a.m. reporting a possible fire in a second-floor air-conditioning unit at 1200 Hertel Ave., said the fire alarm office.
A grocery store occupied the first floor of the building in Hertel’s “Little Italy” section between Lovering and Commonwealth avenues. Residents of the second-floor apartments were evacuated, fire personnel said.
A second alarm was issued and at least five people – children and adults believed to be apartment residents – were transported to the hospital, reported the fire alarm office.
Damages were estimated at $200,000 to the building and $250,000 to its contents.
