Town of Hamburg man accused of driving off after hitting two bicyclists on Elmwood

A Town of Hamburg motorist is accused of striking two bicyclists late Sunday in the Elmwood Village then driving off for several-hundred feet with one of the bikes lodged under his vehicle, Buffalo police said.

Anthony P. Spina, 52, of Lake Shore Road struck Roberta Anderson and David Anderson about 9:45 p.m. in front of 1042 Elmwood Avenue while the Andersons were riding south, a police report said.

Northwest District officers said Spina continued on for several-hundred feet with David Anderson’s bike lodged beneath his vehicle, until he was unable to drive further and stopped in front of 966 Elmwood.

Spina refused to take standard field sobriety tests at the scene, police said, and was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident without reporting and consumption or possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

The victims were taken to Erie County Medical Center, where Roberta Anderson was listed in fair condition late Sunday and David Anderson was treated, then released.
