The Girls on the Run fall season starts Tuesday, but registration is open through 5 p.m. Friday at gotrbuffalo.org.
Girls on the Run is a nonprofit after-school program designed to teach girls in grades 3 to 8 about teamwork, nutrition and physical fitness. Dozens of volunteer coaches serve more than 2,000 girls in Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming and Allegany counties.
The program fee is $150 per girl, and scholarships are available. Find the list of participating schools on the group’s website.
Those enrolled in the program meet with the coaches twice a week after school for 10 weeks. A healthy snack and a lesson are provided during each gathering. At the end of the program, girls run a 5K race and receive medals for successfully completing the program.
