With a strong ground game, Buffalo State opened its football season with a 29-0 win over Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday.
The Bengals gained 501 total yards – 339 on the ground.
Junior running back Tre Jones opened the scoring one minute into the game with an 81-yard touchdown run. He had a 2-yard run for another score in the second, kick starting a 19-point quarter for Buff State.
Dale Stewart and Antoine Holloman had TD runs of 13 and 15 yards while Marc Montana (St. Joe’s) closed out the scoring with a 25-yard field goal in the fourth.
Jones finished the game with 136 yards on 16 carries. Dale Stewart (Niagara Falls) had 77 yards on eight carries with a touchdown and Antoine Holloman added 72 yards on seven carries with a score.
Junior Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) threw for 88 yards, completing 8 of 15 passes. Dan Serignese and Aaron Ertel (Depew) also saw time at quarterback. Serignese was 7 for 13 for 63 yards, and Ertel was 2 for 3 for 11 yards.
Meanwhile, the defense shut out Otterbein, allowing just 114 total yards and just 15 on the ground. Shaq Frederick paced the Bengals’ defense with 16 tackles and a forced fumble, while Marquis Artis (Amherst) added nine stops including two for loss.
The shutout was the first for Buffalo State since a 27-0 victory over the Apprentice School on Oct. 22, 2005. Buffalo State has a week off then plays at Alfred University on Sept. 19.
