The Western New York Flash capitalized on their penalty kicks in a 3-2 victory over the Portland Thorns FC on Friday at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester to end their season with a victory.
Halimatu Ayinde scored on a penalty kick in the sixth minute and Jasmyne Spencer added one of her own less than three minutes later to give the Flash an early 2-0 lead. Samantha Mewis scored in the 24th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.
Team USA superstar Alex Morgan found Jodie Taylor in the 29th minute to bring the game to within 3-1. Portland’s Allie Long scored in the 90th minute, but the Thorns couldn’t get the equalizer.
The Flash and Thorns finished the year with identical 6-9-5 records and 23 points.
