Senior Ralph Cuddemi was named the 2015-16 captain for the Canisius College hockey team while junior defenseman Geoff Fortman will serve as assistant captain.
Cuddemi led the Ice Griffs last season with 39 points, 22 goals with eight coming on the power play. Those 22 goals tied for second in program history and was one shy of the school record. Cuddemi netted two hat tricks last season and was an All-Atlantic Hockey Second Team selection. As a freshman, he scored twice against Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Hockey championship which sent the Griffs to their first NCAA tournament.
Fortman played in 30 games as a sophomore helping to anchor a record-setting Canisius defense which allowed just 2.24 goals a game -- the lowest in school history. He was named the team's Most Improved Player.
“Leadership is critical to any successful team,” Canisius coach Dave Smith said. ”The combination of Ralph and Geoff provides our program with that A-plus leadership. Both are elite citizens, ultra-competitive and have a major influence on the rest of our team. We listen to the captains as a voice of the players and together, we are very excited to start the season.”
The duo is set to lead a team that returns 13 letterwinners, while adding 12 freshmen to the roster, from a squad that matched its best Atlantic Hockey finish in school history and advanced to the league’s final four for the third-straight season.
