#PrepTalkPreview: Girls cross country -- No surprise: Big things expected from EA & Tasselmyer

2014 champions: Last year’s team champions were Williamsville North (Class A), Sweet Home (Class B), East Aurora (Class C), Maple Grove (Class D) and Immaculata (Monsignor Martin). East Aurora won the state championships and Maple Grove finished fourth in its class. Sophia Tasselmyer won the individual state championship for Class C and Hope Pietrocarlo finished fifth in Class D.

2014 All-WNY first-team underclassmen: Sophia Tasselmyer won the girls runner of the year last season as a junior. Fiona Danieu of East Aurora was last year’s 11th grade runner of the year. Maisy Webster of EA was last season’s 10th grade co-runner of the year. Katrina Patterson of Clarence was last season’s 10th grade co-runner of the year. Naomi Wistner of Williamsville North was last year’s eighth grade runner of the year.

Other notable underclassmen: Second teamers: Hope Pietrocarlo-11 (Maple Grove), Margo Henley-9 (Akron), Samantha Henry-10 (Starpoint), Samantha Peterman-10 (Sweet Home), Elizabeth Rott-10 (Clarence). Honorable mentions: Kim Fohrd-11 (Mount St. Mary’s), Shania LiVecchi-11 (West Seneca West), Samantha Gregorie-10 (Lewport), Sam Himes-10 (Sweet Home), Becky Kron-9 (Alden), Amberlee Robertson-9 (Williamsville South), Sierra Wilson-9 (Lewport), Kim Goerss-8 (Newfane).

Returning star power: East Aurora could be poised to make another state title run as it returns the top three Western New York runners from last year’s state championship team. 2015 cross country Prep Talk Player of the Year Tasselmyer, Webster and Danieu finished first, 17th and 19th, respectively, at SUNY Canton last November.

From the coach: “Both boys and girls teams are currently ranked No. 1 in Class C in the state but that doesn’t guarantee success by itself,” East Aurora head coach Walt McLaughlin said. “Time will tell how good this year’s squads will be. It should be a fun season to watch.”

Save the dates: Pioneer at East Aurora, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 29;East Aurora at Starpoint, 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13; Williamsville North at Lancaster, 4:45 p.m. Sept. 29; Sweet Home vs. Williamsville South at Bassett Park Course, 5 p.m. Oct. 6.

Championship time: Sectionals will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 6 at Sunshine Park in West Seneca. States will be Nov. 14 at Monroe Woodbury High School in Central Valley. The New York State Federation Meet is Nov. 21 at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.

Who’s going to be Prep Talk Player of the Year? Why not have a three-peat? Tasselmyer won the inaugural award in her sophomore year at East Aurora. She repeated last year as a junior and is certainly the favorite to do so again as a senior. Some of her best talent may be from her own team in Danieu and Webster. Another runner to watch for is Patterson of Clarence entering her junior year. This year’s Prep Talk Awards will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
