Child found in locked, hot car in Amherst, mother charged

The Buffalo mother of a child who was found inside a hot, locked car parked off Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst Thursday morning was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, Amherst police said Friday.

Town police received a call at about 9:15 a.m. about the unattended child in the car.

An officer located the vehicle and found it to be locked with all of the windows up.

“The weather at the time was bright sun and 80 degrees,” a statement from Amherst Police read.

AAA of Western New York unlocked the doors. The child was sweating and flushed, police said, but the officer determined the child was not in need of medical attention.

The mother, identified as Irina Dyuzheva, 33, eventually came back to the car and was charged. She is scheduled to appear in town court later this month.

The state Office of Child and Family Services was notified about the incident.
