More than 5,000 customers of New York State Electric & Gas were without power late Wednesday afternoon, the utility reported.
Most of the outages – 4,245 – were reported in the town of Lancaster, including on Pavement Road, Walden Avenue, Aurora and William streets and Broadway, according to NYSEG.
The other communities affected were the towns of Clarence, with 357 customers out; Alden, 329; Elma, 86; Aurora, 50; and Wales, 38.
It was unclear late Wednesday afternoon whether increased power demand due to the first 90-plus degree day of the summer in the Buffalo area contributed to the loss of power.
The temperature peaked at 91 degrees at 1:29 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
