Letter: Canalside is not the spot to build an Amtrak station

Canalside is not the spot to build an Amtrak station

The suggestion of an underground Amtrak stop at Canalside is an affront to common sense and will compromise the continuation of the smart development we’ve all enjoyed.

As proposed this station stop would occupy the underground portion of the north block of the old Aud site. After completion the above-ground site would presumably be ready for private development. With above-ground access needs for Amtrak passengers it’s difficult to imagine this small remaining parcel having any potential for developers.

Add the studies and cost needs from all levels of government and we have another Peace Bridge replacement scenario. In the meantime this unsightly parcel will sit and wait.

While I agree the current Amtrak station on Exchange Street is an embarrassment, having city and state leaders suggest Canalside as an alternative will only delay the wonderful progress this area has enjoyed.
