Fire causes minor damage at railroad salvage business in Langford

The cause of a fire early Tuesday at a railroad salvage business in the Town of North Collins is under investigation.

A call for mutual aid went out shortly after 6 a.m., when a fire was reported at Winter’s Railroad Service on Sisson Highway, in the hamlet of Langford. Firefighters arriving on the scene reported seeing smoke coming from a large commercial building, measuring approximately 100 feet by 300 feet.

At about 6:25 a.m., firefighters reported the fire was extinguished.

Damage to the business was minor, company president David J. Winter said Monday, and had no effect on operations. No injuries were reported.

The business, founded in 1955 by Winter’s father, Edwin, and uncle, Clarence, specializes in cleaning up derailments.
