A new prairie-style garden with dogwoods trees around the flag pole at the Chestnut Ridge Park casino will be dedicated at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the singing of the National Anthem, an invocation, a benediction, the playing of Taps and the serving of cake.
The plantings surround a memorial “Blue Star” marker tribute to all past and present members of the armed forces.
The honor is part of a program started by the National Garden Clubs in 1944 when 1,000 dogwood trees were planted along five miles of highway by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs. To set up the Chestnut Ridge plaque and garden, the South Towns Gardeners worked with the Erie County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.
