A teenager from the Southern Tier was killed and three teens were injured in a crash early Saturday on Southwestern Boulevard in Evans, town police reported.
Police say the violent crash took place just before 5 a.m. on Southwestern near Townline Road when a westbound vehicle left the road and went airborne after hitting a culvert next to a driveway. The vehicle twisted or flipped in the air before coming back to the ground and smashing into a tree in the front yard of a foreclosed home at 7452 Southwestern Blvd., said Evans Police Lt. Michael Masullo.
The front-seat passenger, who was wearing his seat belt, managed to get out of the vehicle and flag down a passing motorist, who called 911.
The driver, who also was wearing his seat belt, was pulled from the vehicle by firefighters. The rear passengers, who were not belted in, were ejected from the vehicle, Masullo said.
Mercy Flight and Starflight helicopters took three of the victims to Erie County Medical Center, while the fourth was taken by ambulance.
One of the rear-seat occupants, 16-year-old Martin Lay of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, was killed and the other rear passenger is in critical condition. The driver, Kasey Rosario, 18, of Irving, and the front-seat passenger are in stable condition at the hospital. Town police did not release the names of the two injured passengers.
Southwestern Boulevard was shut down for about four hours Saturday morning as police investigated the crash. The cause remains under investigation.
The Highland and North Evans Fire Companies responded to the crash, with assistance from Evans Center and Lake View.
