The Buffalo Bisons opened their road trip with a 2-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium Friday night.
The Herd was paced by the solid pitching of Matt Boyd, who threw a two-hit shutout for seven innings, walking two and striking out seven.
The Bisons are now two games back of Rochester in the International League North Division race.
Drama in the pen: Miguel Castro relieved Boyd to start the eighth and promptly gave up back-to-back singles. But he then got two fly outs and fielded a ground ball to end the inning and preserve the shutout. Rob Rasmussen gave up back-to-back singles to start the ninth. Gregory Infante’s wild pitch put runners in scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Garin Cecchini scored a run, but a strikeout from Infante ended the game.
Scoring on ground outs: The Herd scored a run in the second and sixth on ground outs. They took a 1-0 lead when Dalton Pompey bounced out to second with one out and the bases loaded. The lead went to 2-0 when Josh Thole grounded out with one out and runners on the corners.
Another game, another two hits: Matt Hague continues to pick up hits. He had two on Friday, giving him 129 for the season.
Pompey at the plate: Pompey had hit in all eight games he has played in since returning to the Bisons on July 17. He has driven in three runs, scored eight and stolen two bases in that time.
Roster moves: Infielder Ty Kelly was activated by the Bisons for Friday’s game. The Blue Jays claimed the switch-hitter off waivers from St. Louis on Wednesday. Meanwhile infielder Ryan Schimpf was transferred to Double-A New Hampshire and infielder Ramon Santiago was released. Schimpf has hit .163 in 24 games with the Herd. Santiago hit .202 and drove in five runs in 33 games for the Bisons this season.
Paid attendance: 5,879.
Pitchers of record: Boyd (3-1) got the win, Zeke Spruill (4-6) the loss.
Next game: The series continues at McCoy Stadium at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. Randy Wolf (6-1, 2.72) starts for the Bisons against Steven Wright (2-5, 3.81).
