NEWFANE – The victim of a hit-and-run crash followed the car that struck his until authorities were able to stop the vehicle and charge the driver with drunken driving.
Nicholas A. Lichtenthal, 40, of Getzville posted a 0.24 percent blood-alcohol content – three times the legal limit – and was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies said the victim, a Burt resident, was driving on Lockport-Olcott Road shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday when the hit-and-run car crossed into his lane and sideswiped his vehicle, knocking off a side-view mirror. The hit-and-run driver stopped briefly before leaving the scene, with the accident victim in pursuit. The victim, meanwhile, kept dispatchers updated on the location of the suspect until deputies reached the scene, authorities said.
Deputies said they found several empty beer cans ins Lichtenthal’s car.
