Buffalo team finishes second at sailing world championships

George Becker, Jimmy Barnash and Laura Beigel of Arnold, Md., won the 2015 Lightning Class World Championship at Buffalo Canoe Club in Ridgeway, Ont., on their yacht called “15296.”

The trio dominated the sailing competition, posting a final score of 54 after nine races over eight days. The weeklong event started on July 18 and ended Saturday.

Buffalo’s Jody Starck, Ian Jones and Skip Dieball finished second with 71. The team is a member of Buffalo Canoe Club.

Billy Martin, Janel Zarkowsky and Chappy Hopkins from Riverton, N.J., tied for third on a gray yacht they named “Ultimate Pressure.” Greg Fisher, Jo Ann Fisher and Zeke Horowitz from Mt. Pleasant, S.C., also finished with a 72 on a white yacht called “What Kinda Gone.”

Amherst’s David Starck, Sarah Paisley and Ned Roseberry finished ninth with a 96 on “PatStrong.”

The top nine finishers were Americans and Canada’s trio of Jamie Allan, Stephanie Boucher and Chantal Leger finished 10th. The three sail out of Beaconsfield Yacht Club in Montreal, and named their boat “Rum Lime.”

Other Western New Yorkers to finish included Rochester’s Mark Sertl, Cory Sertl and Christine Moloney, who finished 25th on their white yacht “Money for nothing.” Kenmore’s Thomas Allen, Mandy Hofmeister and Shelby Allen finished 27th on their yacht “9” and Orchard Park’s Debbie Probst, Maegan Marge Ruhlman and Jenn Millar finished 31st on their gray yacht “WouldaCouldaShoulda.”
