Add the USAirways Club to the list of departures from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
The lounge for VIPs and frequent fliers, long a mainstay of the airport’s west concourse, will close in late August or early September, according to Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority officials.
William R. Vanecek, NFTA director of aviation, said Thursday the closure stems from the pending merger of USAirways with American Airlines. The surviving entity – American – has opted to shutter the existing facility with no plans for replacement with one of its own “Admirals Club” lounges.
Vanecek said the move comes as a surprise since the lounge has always performed well.
“The USAirways Club here was more profitable even than the one at LaGuardia,” he said, referring to LaGuardia International Airport in New York.
It’s possible another carrier may opt to use the space for a lounge, Vanecek said, though no specific plans have yet been formulated.
“We’re going to look at all options,” he added.
