Norman C. Mason, police officer and veteran

Jan. 20, 1948 – July 20, 2015

NORTH TONAWANDA – Norman C. Mason Jr., an Air Force veteran and longtime North Tonawanda police officer, died Monday in his North Tonawanda home. He was 67.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Mason was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School. He worked at Mason’s Power Mower Service as a teenager, and then for his family’s Carvel outlet until joining the Air Force in 1967.

He served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, and was based at Niagara Falls Air Base from 1967 to 1972. He was stationed in Kunson, South Korea, in 1968 and 1969.

Mr. Mason was maintenance supervisor for the North Tonawanda Public Library in 1975 and 1976 and was a North Tonawanda police officer from 1976 to 2002. As an officer, he was a state-certified accident investigator and certified as spotter with Air One Helicopter Capt. Kevin Caffery of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. After 2002, he worked security for Summit Park Mall and was a driver for Colton Recreational Vehicles.

He was a member of Western New York Police Pistol League, served as vice president of North Tonawanda Police Department Benevolent Association and was a member of Active Hose Volunteer Fire Company. He also was a certified scuba diver with the City of Tonawanda Police Underwater Rescue Squad from 1972 to 1992 and a state-certified emergency medical technician.

An active Mason, he was a member of Master Builder Lodge 911, the Consistory and Ismailia Temple.

Survivors include two sons, Jamie and Aaron; a sister, Patricia Weatherbee; three grandsons; and Linda S. Mason, his ex-wife.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Wattengel Funeral Home, 533 Meadow Drive.
