LOCKPORT – The city’s new Cornerstone Ice Arena has been approved to receive a promised state grant of $1 million toward the the facility’s cponstruction cost.
In 2013, Lockport Ice Arena and Sports Center Inc. applied for Empire State Development assistance for the facility, which was completed last year. Cornerstone Ice Arena is a 93,000-square-foot, two-level ice and sports arena envisioned to attract 21,000 skaters and 100,000 visitors a year. Officials said the new facility has the potential to increase retail and hospitality revenue in Niagara County by as much as $3 million a year.
The arena was designated a priority project by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.
The money was was among $17 million in grants for 22 statewide projects recently approved by the Empire State Development Board of Directors.
