A murder-suicide that rocked a quiet Amherst neighborhood is believed to have occurred Saturday, town police said Monday morning.
The bodies of Ellen M. Zingaro, 55, and Richard J. Dux, 53, her longtime, live-in boyfriend, were discovered Sunday afternoon in their Ransom Oaks Drive home by relatives of Zingaro, police said. Both had been shot.
“They were supposed to have a family event that day and they couldn’t get ahold of her,” said Detective Lt. Rick Walter.
After speaking with neighbors, police think the shootings occurred at about 11 a.m. Saturday. Two neighbors reported hearing what they believed, at the time, to be fireworks, Walter said.
Dux apparently fired multiple shots at Zingaro before turning the gun on himself, police said.
There was no history of domestic violence calls at the home, Walter said, but relatives and neighbors with whom Zingaro was friendly told police the couple had argued frequently.
According to public records, Zingaro bought the home in March 2000.
