Region wins development grant

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Commerce Department has chosen the Buffalo-Niagara region as one of seven nationwide to receive funding for a “Communities that Work Partnership,” an effort to improve economic development locally and across the country.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Western New York to bring local partners to the table to examine workforce strategies, determine what works locally and nationally and in the end develop a comprehensive approach to supporting job creation and placement moving forward,” said Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, who announced the grant.

The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration works with the Aspen Institute’s Workforce Strategies Initiative to run the $500,000 program, which will also operate in New York City, Washington, northwest Georgia, Houston, Phoenix and San Francisco.

Lead local partners include the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, the Erie County Executive’s Office and National Grid.
