Buffalo organizations raising funds rebuild churches torched in the South

Several Buffalo organizations are teaming up to help lift from the ashes a number of black churches affected by fire in the southern United States.

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday, the Coalition for Economic Justice, the Buffalo Anti-Racism Coalition, members of various faith groups and allies will host a fundraiser at Sweet_ness 7 Cafe, 220 Grant St.

The proceeds of the event, which runs until 8 p.m., will go toward rebuilding Southern black churches that were partially or totally destroyed by flames at the end of June. Arson, lightning and trees that landed on electrical wires were some of the causes of the fires.

A live performance by local singer and songwriter Jon Herr, a coffee bar and light refreshments are some of the event’s features.

The fundraiser stemmed from a partnership with Rebuild the Churches, a fund started and managed by Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, Mo. According to its website, Rebuild the Churches has raised more than $191,000 toward its goal to gather $250,000.
