LOCKPORT – Thomas C. Rotondo Jr., the only man to be elected mayor of Lockport five times, endorsed Roger L. Sherrie for mayor Tuesday, and was announced as honorary chairman of Sherrie’s campaign.
Rotondo, 83, appointed Sherrie president of the Parks Board and chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee during his time in office. Neither board currently exists. Rotondo recalled that he also performed Sherrie’s wedding in City Hall.
Sherrie is the former regional director of the Civil Service Employees Association. In the September Democratic primary, he will be vying with Michael J. Pillot, a retired policeman who carried the Democratic banner in the 2007 and 2011 elections. The winner will face Republican incumbent Anne E. McCaffrey in November.
“I am honored to lend my name and my support to Roger’s campaign. It didn’t take me long after meeting Roger to know that he was bright, articulate and passionate about the City of Lockport,” Rotondo said.
Since Rotondo retired in 1993, the Democrats have won only one race for citywide office in Lockport.
