Two teen-age phenoms and a college junior held down the top three spots Tuesday after the first round of the New York State Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at the Tuscarora Club in Marcellus.
Kyra Cox, a 15-year-old from Carmel, shot 1-under 71, the only round below par to lead the tournament by three strokes over Danielle Fuss of Oak Hill and Ring Jung, 16, a junior at Hackley School.
Kit Creighton of Crag Burn, who will be a senior at Florida Southern, is tied for fourth place with 3-over 75. Victoria Parker (Orchard Park) is tied for ninth at 78. Sydney Shaw (Orchard Park) is tied for 12 with 79.
Creighton played her front nine in 1-under 35 but had five bogeys in the back nine.
In the State Women’s Mid-Amateur, which is bring run concurrently at Tuscarora, Kim Kaul (Gowanda CC) is tied for second with 6-over 78. Julie Murphy (Brookfield) is tied for sixth at 79. Kaul started her round on the 10th hole and struggled with two double-bogeys and two bogeys, then played her second nine with a 1-over 37.
There will be another medal play round in each tournament Wednesday before the fields are cut to the low 50-percent plus ties for final rounds on Thursday.
