NIAGARA FALLS – The first-ever African-American Male Wellness Walk will be held Saturday morning in Niagara Falls, one of seven cities where the event will take place.
Organizers said they are expecting about 4,000 participants for the 5k walk or run, which begins at 9 a.m. at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, 1201 Pine Ave. A kids’ walk will start at 11:00.
From 7 a.m., there will be free health screenings on-site. Right after the walk activities conclude, the NACC will host Gospel Festival 2015.
The idea began in Ohio, where walks will be held in Columbus, Toledo and Youngstown. On March 21, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul A. Dyster accepted a challenge from Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman to sponsor the walk in Niagara Falls. Dr. Willie Underwood of Roswell Park Cancer Institute is the honorary chairman for the walk.

Besides the city, other sponsors include Independent Health, Univera Healthcare, Rich’s, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Niagara Falls Heritage Area, P2 Collaborative, National Center for Urban Solutions, Catholic Foundation Health Foundation Buffalo and Mount Erie Baptist Church.
