Dec. 29, 1944 – July 12, 2015

Mary Kathryn Harrington, of Orchard Park, a former women’s professional softball player and physical therapy assistant, died Sunday in Cheektowaga. She was 70.

As a young woman in the 1970s, she played softball and was the catcher for the Buffalo Breskis, which existed for four years as a member of the International Women’s Professional Softball league.

She was known to her friends as “Mary Kay.”

She nearly became a nun. After high school, she entered Sisters of St. Mary of Namur convent in Buffalo.

She took simple vows before leaving to help care for her mother and younger siblings.

At the West Seneca Developmental Center she found her calling as a certified physical therapy assistant, a job she held for more than 33 years. She was named employee of the year in 1981 and was nominated for the honor many years afterward during her employment at the Western New York Developmental Disabilities Service Organization in West Seneca.

Ms. Harrington enjoyed sports. In her later years, she followed the Yankees, Duke University basketball and the Buffalo Bills.

Survivors include Kathy Kroldhart, her devoted partner of 40 years; a sister, Christa Williams; and 11 brothers, Bill, Jeff, Andy, Steve, Donald, Roy, Kevin, Kent, Nick, Glenn and Shawn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. July 24 in St. John the Baptist Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.
