Red Cross volunteers were called to assist two families displaced Sunday afternoon by fires sparked within one hour of each other in Buffalo and Orchard Park.
Buffalo firefighters were called at 4 p.m. to 493 Highgate Avenue, between Suffolk and Orleans streets, for a report of fire in the two-story wood frame home, officials said. The home’s first floor was damaged by fire, while the second floor sustained smoke damage, officials said.
Damage was listed at $55,000 to the structure and $30,000 to its contents. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. A family of six was helped by the Red Cross after the fire.
Meanwhile, Orchard Park firefighters were called just before 5 p.m. for a report of fire in the condominium at 20 Hastings Drive, town officials said. Further information on that fire was unavailable late Sunday but the Red Cross said its volunteers assisted eight individuals at the scene.
