LOCKPORT – Apex Clean Energy, promoters of a controversial wind power project in the towns of Somerset and Yates, has signed on as a new corporate sponsor of the Niagara County Fair, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County has announced.
The Apex project, to erect as many as 70 wind turbines near the shores of Lake Ontario, has been officially opposed by the Somerset Town Board, after a mail-in survey showed two-thirds of the town’s property owners oppose it. The project is to be built under the name Lighthouse Wind LLC.
“Apex Clean Energy is excited to support Niagara County’s agricultural community by sponsoring the Niagara County Fair,” said Taylor Quarles, development manager for the Charlottesville, Va., company. “We are committed to responsible development and community involvement, and we look forward to being a part of the Niagara County Fair.”
Other corporate sponsors are WKBW-TV, Mix96 radio, Niagara’s Choice Credit Union, Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union, and Niagara County Community College. The fair runs from Aug. 5-9.
