LOCKPORT – Amateur winemakers are being invited to enter the Niagara County Fair wine contest, which will be judged at 10 a.m. Aug. 8, the second-to-last day of the fair.
Any amateur winemaker over age 21 who lives in New York or southern Ontario may enter right up until the moment the judging begins. July 22 is the first date to drop off wine at the Fairgrounds, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport.
There is a $5 entry fee per bottle, and the wine must be accompanied by an entry form, which can be obtained at cceniagaracounty.org or by calling Cornell Cooperative Extension at 433-8839, extensions 221 or 231.
Prizes will be awarded in 12 categories: red, white and rose wines made with vinifera, native or hybrid grapes, as well as wines that feature berries or tree fruits, and a “specialty” category. Ribbons will be awarded for the best overall red, best overall white and best overall specialty wine. After the judging, fairgoers will be able to taste the entries.
