Distillery on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo offering ‘Mapleshine’

Black Squirrel Distillery will unveil a new craft spirit Saturday called Mapleshine.

A non-aged spirit, it is made in the style of moonshine using New York State maple. It is fermented and distilled by hand in small batches. Each 375-milliliter bottle retails for $27.99 and boasts an alcohol content of 90 proof.

Mapleshine will be available to the public beginning at noon Saturday at the distillery, 1595 Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo.

The company’s other namesake product is also made from New York State maple sap. Black Squirrel is made in a copper pot still in the style of rum and is aged in oak.

The New York Farm Distillery Law has made it easier and cheaper for entrepreneurs to open distilleries as here as long as more than half of their raw materials are sourced within the state. Because there are no local sugar producers, Black Squirrel turned to locally sourced maple.

Black Squirrel is owned by partners Jason Schwinger and Matthew Pelkey.
