HEAVY WEEDING – The Western New York Land Conservancy weighed 1,364 pounds of garlic mustard, an invasive weed, pulled by 240 volunteers from scout troops and outdoor clubs by July 1. The habitat-invading plant took center stage for the fifth annual weeding challenge and Buffalo Audubon Society’s Beaver Meadow Nature Preserve in North Java yielded the most with 730 pulled pounds. The real winners? “Our ecosystems,” said Meaghan Boice-Green, director at the Reinstein Woods Education Center.

BLUE PERIOD – An art exhibit titled “Shades of Blue” will be on display from Tuesday until Aug. 1 at Enjoy the Journey Art Gallery, 1168 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca. The exhibit consists of a different take on colors – using the color and showcasing a piece of artwork with it.
