Double Up Food Bucks WNY, a program designed to help people receiving food assistance purchase more fruits and vegetables, will expand to 15 farmers markets across five Western New York counties later this year.
The program is a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) incentive that provides a $1-for-$1 match for anybody who chooses to spend SNAP dollars at participating farmers markets. The program will provide the match for up to $20 per market per day.
The program can be used to purchase fruits and vegetables grown only in New York State.
Field & Fork Network, in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Harvest NY, piloted the food program at seven local farmers markets, and saw a large increase in both SNAP purchases and overall food assistance purchases. The successful pilot program encouraged more farmers markets to participate in the program.
