Ability to forgive killer shows incredible strength
I happened to be at a meeting of my Spiritus Christi group when we began discussing the tragic shooting in Charleston, S.C. As we spoke about forgiveness, I entered the discussion and put forth my views of forgiveness. How could the parishioners and families forgive so easily so soon after the murders? I felt that I could not forgive so easily and that it would be a process for me.
One enlightened lady in our midst stated, “Perhaps they could forgive so easily because they have had a lot of experience with forgiving. Especially the older ones, who have seen lynchings and their young men imprisoned.”
It was like a light bulb went off for me. Of course, that is why, and also their deep faith that sustains them. Yes, they have had a lot of experience with forgiving. May God bless them for the pain they have endured, and let’s hope there will be no more.
