Lockport has larger target in singing record attempt

LOCKPORT – The Guinness world record for the most people singing on a live radio broadcast, which Lockport is trying to break Sunday at the Taste of Lockport, became more difficult to beat this week.

On Monday, a crowd of 6,904 in London’s Hyde Park sang on the air. That broke last December’s record of 6,690, set in Hong Kong, which Taste organizer Jennifer Serrano had considered the target.

The attempt to break the record by singing the Erie Canal song “Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal,” also known as “Low Bridge, Everybody Down,” is scheduled for 4:11 p.m. Sunday and is to be aired by Buffalo radio station Jack FM, 92.9.

It is to culminate the 15th annual Taste of Lockport, the final event of the city’s sesquicentennial week. The Taste runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Ida Fritz Park, West and Park avenues, and along Main Street between the park and Locust Street. The Guinness adjudicator, Michael Empric, will announce the results after they are confirmed by independent auditors Joseph M. Klimek and David J. Spara of Toski & Co.
