Letter: Legally armed citizens help to deter criminals

Legally armed citizens help to deter criminals

A recent letter on guns from someone at the Western New York Peace Center is wrong on almost everything it claims. Anyone legally buying a gun from a licensed dealer has to have a federal background check. The problem is, if a criminal is not on the “no buy” list, the purchase can be made. The other problem is that the vast majority of guns used in crimes are illegal guns, obtained and carried illegally. No additional gun law would prevent that.

As far as there being too many guns around, even though hundreds of thousands of guns have been obtained by law-abiding citizens in the last 20 years or so, violent crime has fallen dramatically in that time. So have gun accidents involving children, thanks in part to the NRA’s safety programs.

Guns in the hands of law-abiding people are a threat only to criminals, as seen by the fact that guns are used for self defense over a million times each year. Even an anti-gun group’s study came up with a figure of over 650,000 defensive gun uses a year.

Finally, it is an undeniable fact (see John Lott’s book, “More Guns, Less Crime”) that the more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, the safer everyone is.
