Man, 79, dies in collision in Somerset

SOMERSET – A 79-year-old man died Tuesday in a collision in Somerset, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s office.

The man was a passenger in a Ford van that pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle shortly after 7:30 a.m. at Lake and Hartland roads. Emergency personnel reported one vehicle on its side and the other in a ditch.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, the van, which was driven by a home-care aide south on Hartland Road, entered traffic after stopping for a stop sign, failing to yield to an oncoming Jeep SUV, driven by a woman, heading east on Lake.

The driver of the Ford van and the driver of the Jeep suffered non-life threatening injuries, deputies said. Both were transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Kenneth Lederhouse.

An investigation is underway by the Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit. Names have not been released.
