Letter: Those who are different deserve to be accepted

Those who are different deserve to be accepted

The society around us today has been changing immensely in different ways. An issue I find interesting and meaningful is the recent sex change by Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner. A lot of controversy surrounds Jenner becoming a woman.

Today more individuals are becoming more accepting of their sexuality. Jenner has set an example, and has been an inspiration to others who might feel the same about themselves. Some people think it was wonderful that Jenner took the chance of criticism and followed her dreams of becoming what she wanted to be all along. Others believe this transformation is inappropriate, unnecessary and attention seeking.

In a recent article, Jeff Simon stated, “If, as Caitlyn says, she is ‘the new normal,’ we have to understand that the ‘old normal’ of men in drag … is not going to fit in.” This attitude is what society should be striving toward.

In my opinion, people should be free to do anything that makes them happy, as long as they are not harming anyone else. So much negativity toward Jenner’s decision is ridiculous and this disapproval needs to stop. Writing hurtful comments is not going to make Jenner or anyone else feel better, only worse, and people within the LGBT community have felt harassed enough as it is. After all, this is supposed to be a free country.
