Where we live: Buffalo

Buffalo

A special pictorial postmark commemorating the President Lincoln Funeral TRain route will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Central Library, 1 Lafayette Square. The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library is working with the U.S. Postal Service - WNY Region to offer stamp collectors and history buffs the postmark.

Collectors should bring an envelope or a postcard with First Class postage affixed to receive the cancellation. Commemorative envelopes will be available for purchase at the library for $12. The postmark was developed as part of the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Lincoln’s assassination and the funeral train journey from Washington, D.C. to Lincoln’s final resting place in Springfield, Illinois. Thousands came to pay tribute when the train came to Buffalo on April 27, 1865.

The Central Library has an exhibit of Lincoln’s letters in the main floor of the library which runs through July 11. For more information, go to BuffaloLib.org or call 858-8900.
