Meet the man who brought the 22-day manhunt for the escaped prisoners to an end.
State Police Sgt. Jay Cook, who is from Troop B which is in the area of the search, saw David P. Sweat on a road near the Canadian border, chased him on foot into a field and opened fire with his handgun, striking Sweat, 35, twice in the back.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said he spoke with Cook and commended him for his bravery.
“He was still alone,” Cuomo noted. “It was a very courageous act.” He said Cook is the father of two daughters, 16 and 17. “Go home tonight and tell your daughters you’re a hero,” he said.
Then he joked: “With teenage girls, that will probably last a good 24 hours and you go back to being a regular dad, as well I know.”
