Letter: Symbols and flags convey a powerful social message

Symbols and flags convey a powerful social message

A long time ago in theology class, I was taught that symbols, unlike signs, contain multiple meanings. Flags thus are a nation’s and culture’s rallying point. Old Glory stands for multiple meanings for those who look upon her, most of them positive – for example, freedom, justice for all, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

As we again are forced to reflect on the savagery of racism and violence, what various meanings do you think the Confederate flag flying over several Southern capitols communicates, especially to young and impressionable white males? So much of the violence we are witnessing here and abroad is due to the ignorance and warped views and outlooks communicated by symbols that are twisted to offer only one hateful message.

We must do all in our power to use our most cherished symbols to communicate peace, love, harmony and the unity of the human family.
