Jones sets PR but falls shy of worlds

It was a personal best for Jonathan Jones, but the University at Buffalo senior fell just short of qualifying for the World Championships.

Jones finished fifth in the shot put at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

He threw a personal best 68 feet, 7 ¾ inches on his third throw, placing him fourth after the preliminary round. But Jones, a Portville native, fouled on his next two throws and his final throw was 64 6½.

The top four finishers qualified to represent the United States at this year’s World Track and Field Championships.

The top three finishers were all part of the Nike team – Joe Kovacs (71-8), Christian Cantwell (71-0) and Jordan Clarke (70-6¼) with Resse Hoffa (69-6) of Nike/NYAC taking fourth.

Jones was the top collegiate performer. He won the NCAA Outdoor Championships this year and is a six-time All-American in the shot put.
