UB’s Morgan places fifth in decathlon

EUGENE, Ore. — University at Buffalo junior Mike Morgan finished fifth in the decathlon on Friday night at the USATF Championships. Morgan ranked second among NCAA athletes at the championships while recording 7,555 points and becoming the first UB track and field athlete to earn a spot on the senior USA National team.

“To compete at your first USATF Championships, against Olympians and NCAA champions and taking fifth place overall is an impressive accomplishment for Mike,” said UB coach Vicki Mitchell. “Mike has a very bright future in the decathlon ahead of him.”

Morgan’s strong showing was highlighted with five top-five finishes in the 10 events. He also set a personal best of 10.86 seconds in finishing sixth in the 100 meters. Morgan’s best finishes were third places in the high jump (6-5.5), discus (137-9) and 1,500 (4:43.60). Also, he was fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth with a personal-best long jump of 23-10.

UB shot putter Jon Jones, the NCAA champion, will compete on Sunday.
