Lockport agency applies for grant for Flight of Five locks

LOCKPORT – The City of Lockport’s development agency is applying for a federal grant that could be applied to the restoration of the 19th-century Erie Canal locks, known as the Flight of Five.

The Greater Lockport Development Corp. board voted last week to seek a $200,000 National Maritime Heritage grant, with the money being applied toward work on the remaining three locks of the Flight.

Two of the five were returned to working order last year after being dormant for a century, and city officials are hoping the restored Flight will turn out to be a major tourist attraction.

City Planning and Industrial Development Director Brian M. Smith said the city wanted to apply for the grant last year, but failed to meet an application deadline.
