Fourteen years later after this article was written, as the Watergate scandal embroiled the Nixon presidency and all of America, this question would certainly take on a different tone. In 1960, though, Richard Nixon was vice president and one of a handful of men running for the Republican nomination for president.

Nixon won the Republican line but lost to John F. Kennedy in the general election. He was ultimately elected president in 1968, was re-elected in 1972 and was forced to resign in 1974.
