June 25, 1960: For chef on a Great Lakes freighter, day starts at 6 a.m. with baking pies

“We eat the best in the world,” said the captain of the Lakes freighter, John J. Boland.

That was due, in large measure, to the round-the-clock work of the ship’s 68-year-old pie-baking chief steward, Charles Coyne.

The men got three great meals, plenty of snacks like cheese and luncheon meat in the ice box and as much coffee as 5 pounds could make every day.
